Compost for kids

ADAM can help you make better compost

Did you know that ADAM can help you and your kids make great compost?
ADAM is a great way to help kids remember the important elements required for making good compost for the garden:
A – Aliveness – A compost pile is living system and home to billions of micro-organisms that work to breakdown and help kitchen and garden waste decompose.
D – Diversity – A rich and healthy compost pile needs a diverse range of materials. Make sure you include a mix or green (nitrogen-rich) and brown (carbon-rich) materials. Examples of green materials include – fruit and vegie scraps, fresh grass clippings, manure, coffee grounds and tea bags. Brown materials include straw and sugarcane mulch, dry leaves and grass, cardboard and paper.
A – Aeration (or air) – Good aeration is important in helping waste break down and keep the compost pile smelling sweet rather than stinky. You can help aerate your compost pile by turning it regularly.
M – Moisture – Compost needs moisture to help materials break down. You don’t want it to be too wet though or it will become smelly. Ideally compost should be as wet as a damp sponge.
So there you go. If you become familiar with ADAM you will have beautiful compost in no time.
Happy gardening!
